In this article, we invite you to learn more about these fascinating creatures to discover during your stay at our campsite in the Auvergne.

Bighorn sheep are mainly found in mountainous and rocky areas. They find refuge on steep slopes and in sparse forests. You’ll be able to spot them around the Puy de Sancy and surrounding ridges, just a few minutes from our riverside campsite. These mountain habitats offer mouflons protection from predators and access to varied vegetation, allowing them to feed on grasses, leaves and young shoots.

Mouflons are social animals that live in groups, generally made up of females and their young. Males form separate groups. They are mainly active at dawn and dusk, making them diurnal animals. Their behavior is fascinating: males often fight to establish dominance and attract females. It’s an impressive sight to behold during your stay at our campsite near Super Besse.

The best time to see mouflons in the Puy-de-Dôme is during spring and summer. The animals are most visible when the young are born. The months of May to September are ideal, as mouflons often come out to feed in meadows and open areas.

Don’t forget to pack your binoculars when you leave our campsite near the Puy de Sancy , so you can enjoy this experience without disturbing them.
