Auvergne’s 80 volcanoes bear witness to intense geological activity. They offer breathtaking panoramas and a rich biodiversity. Among these wonders, the Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in the Massif Central, rises majestically. The Artense plateau, with its vast meadows and lakes, invites you to explore.

Our campsite in the Puy de Dômeis ideally located at the center of these three wonders. Firstly, the Ordanche Valley, then the Puy de Sancy and the Artense plateau. This allows you to take full advantage of all the activities and discoveries this region has to offer.

In this article, discover Auvergne’s volcanoes and nearby puys, both well-known and lesser-known, to immerse yourself in the heart of this geological and natural wealth.

Puy de Sancy is the highest peak in the Massif Central, culminating at 1,885 metres. Its geological history dates back some 10,000 years, when the region was shaped by volcanic eruptions. Puy de Sancy is the result of volcanic activity during the Quaternary period. Lava flows and ash deposits formed its present relief. Just 10 minutes from our riverside campsite, join the trails from Chastreix or the stèle.

The Puy de Redon, located close to the Puy de Sancy, is another iconic volcano in the Auvergne Puys chain . With an altitude of around 1,464 metres, it is lower than its neighbor, but offers equally spectacular scenery. It is often associated with local legends and popular beliefs. What’s more, the region’s inhabitants have long regarded these mountains as sacred places. Of course, Puy de Redon is no exception to this tradition.

Puy de Montchal, at around 1,400 metres altitude, is one of the youngest volcanoes in the Massif Central and an ideal destination for nature lovers. Easily accessible from Lac Pavin, it allows you to explore fascinating volcanic landscapes while enjoying breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The Puy de Montchal , just a few minutes from our campsite near Super-Besse, promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Auvergne.

The Puy de Chambourguet, although little-known by the general public, is a hidden treasure of the Massif Central, culminating at around 1,500 meters above sea level. This dormant volcano, with its rounded shapes and verdant landscapes, offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and deep valleys. Puy de Chambourguet is a must-see destination for those wishing to explore the wild beauty of the Auvergne while staying at our campsite near the Auvergne volcanoes.

The Roc de Courlande is a majestic peak that towers over the enchanting Cézalier and Artense landscapes, offering visitors a breathtaking panoramic view. What’s more, as you walk along the paths leading to its summit, you’ll be lucky enough to come across three statues of the Virgin Mary. Along the way, they add a spiritual dimension to this hike. At the summit, a cross stands proudly on the peak.

Les Bannes d’Ordanche culminates at an altitude of around 1,400 meters, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Les Bannes d’Ordanche can be reached from Lac de Guéry.
